Razz là biến thể poker "ngược đời" nhất — tay thấp nhất thắng, không có high hand nào được thưởng. Đây là component R trong HORSE và là game riêng biệt với fanbase trung thành tại WSOP và online.
Razz Là Gì?
Razz = Seven Card Stud Lowball
- Played with 7 cards per player
- The lowest 5-card hand wins
- Aces always count as low (= best possible low card)
- Straights và flushes do NOT count against you (they're irrelevant)
- No "8 or better" qualifier needed (unlike Omaha Hi-Lo)
Đơn giản nhất: Hand with lowest high card wins.
A-2-3-4-5 = perfect "wheel" = unbeatable Razz hand.
Rules: Cách Chơi Razz
Deal Structure
Third Street:
- Each player receives 2 cards face down (hole cards) + 1 card face up (door card)
- Player with highest door card must post forced bet (bring-in)
Wait — this is opposite of Stud! In Razz, highest card is worst, so they pay.
Fourth Street:
- One more card dealt face up
- Player showing lowest exposed hand acts first
Fifth Street:
- Another card up
- Player showing lowest exposed hand acts first
- Betting limit doubles (in Fixed Limit)
Sixth Street:
- Another card up
- Same betting structure as Fifth
Seventh Street (River):
- Last card dealt face down
- Final round of betting
- Best low hand wins
Maximum Players
Razz is played with up to 8 players (52 cards ÷ 7 cards each = 7-8 players maximum).
If too many players remain and deck runs out, seventh street can be dealt as a community card.
Tay Thấp: Cách Tính
Low Hand Ranking
Lower is better. Highest card in 5-card hand = primary determiner.
A-2-3-4-5 = best possible (called "wheel" or "bicycle") A-2-3-4-6 = second best A-2-3-5-6 = third best
Comparison method: Compare highest card first. Ties → compare second highest, etc.
Examples:
- A-2-3-4-7 vs. A-2-3-5-6 → compare highest: 7 vs. 6 → 6 wins → A-2-3-5-6 wins
- A-2-3-4-5 vs. A-2-3-4-6 → compare highest: 5 vs. 6 → 5 wins → A-2-3-4-5 wins (wheel)
Straights And Flushes
Important: In Razz, straights and flushes do NOT count against you.
A-2-3-4-5 of same suit = still a "wheel" low hand, not a flush.
This is different from some other lowball games where flushes count against you.
Pairs Ruin Low Hands
If any card pairs in your 5-card hand, it doesn't count as low.
Example: A-A-2-3-4 = you have a pair of Aces → hand is now judged as Aces high (bad in Razz).
Unpaired 5 cards all below 9 = decent Razz hand.
Starting Hands: Third Street
Premium Starters
Three cards to the wheel (A-2-3, A-2-4, A-2-5): Monster starts.
Very live (key cards not yet seen in others' upcards).
Strong Starters
Three low cards all 6 or below: Very playable.
A-3-5, 2-4-6, etc.
Key factor: Are these cards "live"? If you have A-2 in hand but see three other aces in opponents' door cards → your hand is weakened.
Marginal Starters
Three low cards with one 7 or 8: Playable but beware of board development.
A-2-8 = playable but needs improvement.
Fold Territory
Any hand with a 9 or above in first three cards: Generally fold.
A-2-9 starting hand → need to catch two more cards below 9 to make a hand → too much work.
Pairs on third street: Dangerous start — pair uses up a "slot" that needs to be low card.
Key Skill: Reading Upcards And Dead Cards
Why Upcard Memory Matters So Much
In Razz, you see opponents' exposed cards. This tells you:
- Which cards are dead (unavailable to you)
- How good their hand likely is
Example:
You have A-2-3 (great start).
Looking at table:
- Opponent 1 shows: 5 upcard
- Opponent 2 shows: A upcard
- Opponent 3 shows: 2 upcard
- Opponent 4 shows: 4 upcard
Your A-2-3 is now weaker — two of your key low cards (A, 2) are dead in others' upcards.
Reading Opponents' Exposed Hands
If opponent shows: 3-6-9 (three upcards after more streets)
Their best possible hand includes a 9 → any hand you make with no card above 8 beats them.
Use upcards to estimate opponents' hand strength and decide whether to continue.
Common Razz Mistakes
Mistake 1: Not Tracking Dead Cards
Playing A-2 when three other aces are visible in others' upcards → you'll rarely make the nut low you're hoping for.
Fix: Always scan upcards before assessing your starting hand.
Mistake 2: Chasing With Bad Starts
Starting with 2-7-9 and calling bets hoping to catch well → rarely justified.
Fix: Starting hand standards matter. Bad third-street start = fold more often.
Mistake 3: Playing "Straightforward" Obvious
If your upcards show 2-3-4, opponents know you have a very low hand.
Opportunity: Sometimes bet big because opponents can "see" your strength and will fold.
But: Also know they will respect your bets, so your bluff value with strong upcards is lower.
Mistake 4: Forgetting No Low Qualifier
Unlike Omaha Hi-Lo, there's no "8 or better" qualifier in Razz.
If you and opponent both have hands with 9-high low, the 9-high hand still wins (lower one).
Even a "bad" low hand can win in Razz if opponents are worse.

| Aspect | Razz | Omaha Hi-Lo |
|---|---|---|
| Community cards | No | Yes |
| Low qualifier | None needed | Must qualify 8-or-better |
| Straights/flushes | Don't count | Count against low |
| Game structure | Stud | Flop/Turn/River |
| High hand | No (pure low) | Yes (split pot) |
Kết Luận
Razz challenges your poker thinking by inverting everything:
- Lowest hand wins — mentally flip your hand evaluation
- Aces are best — always count as low
- No qualifier needed — any 5-card low hand competes
- Dead cards matter enormously — live cards = real hand strength
- Starting hand standards are critical — don't chase bad starts
- Memory skill = track all visible upcards throughout hand
Razz is a beautiful game that rewards card memory, patient starting hand selection, and reading opponent upcards precisely. For Hold'em players wanting to expand their game, Razz offers a fundamentally different challenge that ultimately improves overall poker thinking.
