Layered Approach
Preflop → Flop → Turn → River: Mỗi street loại bỏ tay không phù hợp với action.
Preflop: Building Starting Range
Position As First Signal
Position reveals starting range probability.
UTG raise (9-handed): ~12-15% hands. Premium pairs, strong broadway, strong aces.
BTN open: ~35-45% hands. Much wider.
SB 3-bet: 2-4% of hands (typical). Premium value or selective bluffs.
Build starting range: position + action type.
Action Type Refines Further
Limp: Suggests speculative or weak hand.
Open raise: Standard for position.
3-bet: Usually strong. In GTO = polarized. In most player pools = just value.
4-bet: Almost always premium (AA, KK, QQ, AK).
Call a 3-bet: Eliminates premium hands (they'd 4-bet those). Suggests medium hands: QQ-88, AQs, KQs type.
Flop: First Major Narrowing
Board-Range Interaction
"Given preflop action, how does board connect with their range?"
Example:
Villain 3-bet preflop (range: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK). Board: A-K-7.
Board HEAVILY hits their range. Expect strong hands often.
Alternative:
Villain flat-called BTN open (range: mid pairs, suited connectors, broadway). Board: 2-5-9.
Board WEAKLY hits their range. Many hands completely missed.
C-Bet Information
C-bet occurred: Has hands worth betting. Eliminates complete air (mostly).
Check occurred: Didn't want to build pot. Many missed hands. Some traps possible.
C-bet size matters:
- Small (25-33%): Wide range betting — not much narrowing info.
- Large (75%+): Polarized — either strong value or bluff.
Turn: Critical Refinement
"What Hands Would Continue?"
After flop call/raise: What range continues?
Flop call: Eliminates many folds. Suggests: Made hand, draw, or float.
Flop check-call: Doesn't want to build pot fast — moderate pair, draw, or slowplay.
Flop check-raise: Strong hands or semi-bluffs. Eliminates "pure air" from most players.
Turn Card Effect
How does turn card interact with remaining range?
Turn Ace on K-7-2 board: Player bet flop, bets turn on Ace.
Their range now more heavily weighted toward AK, AA, Ax type hands.
Blank turn: Doesn't change range composition much. Check for c-bet frequency.
Turn Sizing Shifts
Small flop bet → Large turn bet: Usually escalating value commitment.
Large flop bet → Small turn bet: Often slowing down — second-best hand or missed semi-bluff.
Bet flop → Check turn: Classic either give-up OR slowplay (needs evaluation).
River: Final Identification
Who Remains In Range?
By river, most of their range is defined.
Process example:
UTG open. You BTN call. Board: K-9-4 / 7 / 2.
They bet flop 50% → check turn → bet river 80%.
Flop bet (medium size): Has something. Not air.
Check turn: Either slowing down or trap.
Large river bet: Not thin value. Strong hand or bluff with no showdown value.
Range now: Strong value (KK, 99, K9) OR missed draw bluffing. NOT medium pair (wouldn't bet large river).
Blocker Effects
What cards do you hold that affect their possible holdings?
You have K♠ → Their KK, K9, KJ combos reduced.
Blocker: Having a card in their value range = fewer combos they can have.
Implications: Their value combos are fewer, bluff combos become larger proportion.
Betting Pattern Shortcuts
Pattern 1: Check-Call Flop, Bet Turn
Usually: Player who checked flop, called c-bet, then bets turn OOP = strong hand.
Reasoning: If they were weak, they'd fold flop. If drawing, they'd check again. Betting turn after calling = usually made hand (pair+) or strong draw turning aggressive.
Pattern 2: Raise Flop, Bet Turn Small
Often: Semi-bluff that improved OR value slow-rolling.
Check: Does turn connect with possible draws they had on flop?
If yes → Often made their draw.
Pattern 3: Bet Small All Streets
Three small bets: Often polarized bluff OR thin value trying to extract without folding opponent.
Hard to be strong hand that bets small every street (usually size up with monsters).
Pattern 4: Check-Check-Bet River
Two streets of checking → River bet.
Often: Hand that couldn't bet earlier (didn't want to build pot) but has value at showdown OR a bluff exploiting opponent's "they're weak, they'll fold" assumption.
Combining Information: Example Walkthrough
Hand Setup
Preflop: HJ opens. CO calls (you). BB folds.
Your range: Called HJ open from CO. You have 88.
Board: Q♥ J♦ 4♣
Flop: HJ bets 50% pot.
Your read so far: HJ opened HJ position — range: ~20% hands. C-bet 50% on QJ4.
Their range: QQ, JJ, AQ, KQ, AJ, KJs, 44 (unlikely 3 combos), QJs, T9s(flush draws) — concentrated in Q and J high connectivity.
Action: You call with 88 (have some equity, not committed).
Turn: 7♥ (flush draw completes possibility with backdoor)
HJ bets 70% pot.
Updated read: Second barrel on the 7♥.
Does 7♥ help HJ's range? Brings in flush possibility. But most of their hands (QQ, AQ, KQ, AJ) don't have hearts particularly.
They're barreling again = more likely value (QQ, JJ, 44) OR nut flush (unlikely given preflop range).
Less likely bluffing on 7♥ (wouldn't choose this card to double barrel).
Your decision: 88 has ~20% equity here (need a miracle 8 or running cards). Fold.
River: (irrelevant — you folded).
Kết Luận
Advanced hand reading framework:
- Preflop: Position + action type = initial range
- Flop: C-bet? Size? Board connectivity? Narrow.
- Turn: What hands continue? Size shifts? Card effect?
- River: Final distribution. Who's left?
- Blockers: Your cards eliminate their combos.
- Pattern recognition: Learn betting patterns for your player pool.
- Think distributions — not "they have X" but "distribution of hands that explain this action."
Range narrowing is a skill that improves with deliberate practice. Every session, practice constructing opponent ranges at each street and testing your reads at showdown. Over time, your accuracy compounds into a massive edge.
