"Position is everything in poker" — câu này được lặp đi lặp lại bởi mọi poker instructor. Nhưng nhiều beginner không hiểu tại sao và làm thế nào để tận dụng position. Đây là hướng dẫn đầy đủ từ cơ bản.

Các Vị Trí Trong Poker (9-Handed)

Button (BTN) — Vị Trí Good Nhất

Dealer button = vị trí good nhất tại bàn.

BTN acts LAST postflop trên flop, turn, và river — sau tất cả players khác (trừ preflop).

Preflop: BTN acts trước SB và BB, nhưng sau tất cả các position khác.

Postflop: BTN acts cuối cùng mỗi street.

Cutoff (CO)

Một seat bên phải của BTN.

Second best position — acts second to last postflop.

CO có thể "steal" BTN position nếu BTN folds.

Hijack (HJ)

Hai seats bên phải BTN.

Middle-late position. Reasonable position advantage.

Middle Position (MP)

Các ghế từ early đến HJ tùy theo số players.

9-handed: MP = 3 ghế giữa bàn.

Medium position — không quá sớm, không quá muộn.

Early Position (EP) / Under The Gun (UTG)

UTG = player đầu tiên phải act sau blinds preflop.

Worst preflop position — phải act trước tất cả players.

UTG+1: Một seat sau UTG.

Small Blind (SB)

Bên trái của dealer. Post half the big blind.

Interesting position: Acts last preflop (after BTN), acts FIRST postflop (before BB).

SB has worst postflop position.

Big Blind (BB)

Bên trái SB. Post full blind.

Acts second in preflop (after SB, before UTG in preflop betting in terms of rounds).

Special: BB already has money invested, gets "discount" to call.

Tại Sao Position Quan Trọng?

Information Advantage

Acting last = seeing all opponent actions first.

When IP, you see:

  • Did they bet or check?
  • What size did they use?
  • How quickly did they act?

All of this is information. You act with more data than OOP players.

Control Pot Size

IP: You can choose whether to build the pot.

They check → You can bet (build pot when strong) or check back (control pot when weak).

OOP: You must decide WITHOUT knowing what they'll do.

Avoid Difficult Spots

OOP: Check → They bet → You face a decision without information.

IP: They act first → You see their action → Easier decision.

Position reduces the number of difficult spots you face.

How Position Changes Your Strategy

Opening Ranges By Position

The later your position, the wider you can open.

Why? Fewer players left to act = fewer ways to be dominated.

Approximate open-raise ranges (6-max):

Position Approximate Range
UTG 15-18%
MP 20-25%
CO 28-35%
BTN 40-50%
SB 35-45%

BTN opens almost twice as wide as UTG because fewer players behind, and IP postflop.

Calling Ranges By Position

Calling is significantly better in position than out of position.

BTN calling a CO raise: Excellent. You'll be IP postflop.

BB calling a BTN raise: Okay. You'll be OOP postflop — tighten calling range accordingly.

Postflop Aggression By Position

IP: Can bet and control action. Stronger postflop play possible.

OOP: More defensive. Check more often. Pick spots to bet carefully.

The Dealer Button: Why It Rotates

The button rotates clockwise each hand.

Purpose: Everyone gets equal access to positional advantage over a session.

Over one full orbit: You play each position once.

This is why poker is considered a game of skill — positions rotate, so long-run equity is about play quality, not position luck.

Practical Position Tips For Beginners

Play More Hands In Position

From BTN, CO: Wider range. You'll have IP advantage postflop.

From UTG, BB: Tighter range. Position disadvantage hurts.

Simple rule: The earlier your position, the tighter your hand selection.

Notice When You're IP vs. OOP Postflop

After each flop, immediately note: "Am I IP or OOP in this hand?"

This determines your default postflop approach.

IP: Can bet more often, control pot.

OOP: More check-call, selective aggression.

Don't Limp In Position

When you decide to play a hand from position → Raise, don't limp.

Raising (rather than limping) preserves IP advantage:

  • Takes initiative
  • Sets up c-betting
  • Defines your range as stronger

Limping IP wastes your positional advantage.

From Blinds: Accept You're OOP

Many players defend their blinds too aggressively because "I've already put money in."

Sunk cost fallacy. The blind money is gone.

Evaluate each call/raise on its own merits, knowing you'll be OOP.

Calling too wide from BB = setting up difficult OOP situations all hand.

Position In Different Game Formats

6-Max vs. 9-Handed

6-Max: Each position "shifts" earlier.

In 6-max, CO is "early-ish" position relative to BTN.

9-Handed: More players, more positions, wider range of early vs. late.

Heads-Up

Only two positions: Button (SB/Dealer) and BB.

Button acts last preflop AND first postflop (reversed from normal).

In HU, button is hugely advantageous — even more so than at full ring.

Position And Pot Odds Together

When calling bets:

IP + good pot odds = clear call.

OOP + marginal pot odds = usually fold.

The combination of position and pot odds determines many preflop and postflop decisions.

Kết Luận

Position fundamentals:

  1. BTN = best position — acts last postflop, maximum information
  2. UTG/EP = worst — must act first without information
  3. Playing in position: Wider ranges, more aggression justified
  4. Playing OOP: Tighter ranges, more defensive play
  5. Postflop IP: Bet and control pot
  6. Postflop OOP: Check-call, selective aggression
  7. Blinds: Already invested but OOP — don't defend too wide

Every hand you play, position awareness should be your first thought. "Where am I relative to everyone else?" — This single question changes everything about how you approach the hand.
