OESD (Open-Ended Straight Draw)

Hand: 7♣8♦ Board: 5♠6♥K♣

Cards 5-6-7-8 = OESD

Complete với: 4 (4-5-6-7-8 straight) hoặc 9 (5-6-7-8-9 straight)

8 outs: 4♠, 4♥, 4♦, 4♣, 9♠, 9♥, 9♦, 9♣

OESD Equity

On flop (with 2 cards to come):

Equity ≈ 8 × 4% + bonus ≈ 32-34%

On turn (with 1 card to come):

Equity ≈ 8 × 2% ≈ 17-18%

Gutshot (Inside Straight Draw)

Định Nghĩa

Gutshot = 4 cards với 1 gap ở giữa — chỉ có thể complete từ one specific rank.

Ví dụ:

Cards: 5-6-8-9

Gap: Missing 7 in the middle.

Complete straight: Only 7 (5-6-7-8-9)

4 outs total (chỉ 4 sevens = 4 outs)

Ví Dụ Gutshot

Hand: 5♦9♠ Board: 6♥7♣K♠

Cards 5-6-7-9 = Gutshot (missing 8)

Complete với: 8 only (5-6-7-8-9 straight)

4 outs: 8♠, 8♥, 8♦, 8♣

Gutshot Equity

On flop (with 2 cards to come):

Equity ≈ 4 × 4% + bonus ≈ 16-17%

On turn (with 1 card to come):

Equity ≈ 4 × 2% ≈ 8-9%

So Sánh OESD vs. Gutshot

Aspect OESD Gutshot
Completing cards 2 end ranks 1 middle rank
Outs 8 4
Equity (flop) ~32-34% ~16-17%
Equity (turn) ~17-18% ~8-9%
Visibility Board obvious Board may not show
Pot odds needed Moderate High

Pot Odds Cho Straight Draws

Pot Odds Formula

Pot odds = Call / (Pot + Call)

Bạn cần equity ≥ pot odds để call profitably.

OESD (8 outs, ~17-18% on turn)

Cần: ≥17-18% equity

Profitable call khi:

Pot: $100, Bet: $30 → Pot odds = 30/130 = 23% → Need 23% → OESD (17%) = NOT profitable pure equity call (but implied odds may help).

Pot: $100, Bet: $20 → 20/120 = 17% → OESD barely break-even (implies odds from river should tip decision).

Với implied odds: Can call more because hitting = win more from opponent's strong hand.

Gutshot (4 outs, ~8-9% on turn)

Much tighter requirements:

Pot: $100, Bet: $8 → 8/108 = 7.4% → Profitable (barely)

Pot: $100, Bet: $20 → 20/120 = 17% → NOT profitable (need 17%, only have 8-9%)

Rule: Gutshot requires large implied odds or great pot odds. Usually avoid calling large bets with gutshot alone.

Playing OESD

Semi-Bluff Potential

OESD với 8 outs = significant equity = strong semi-bluff candidate.

Example:

You have 8♠9♠, board J♦T♣2♥ (OESD with Q or 7 completing).

Can bet/raise as semi-bluff with solid equity if called.

Why semi-bluff OESD:

  • 33% equity if called = profitable vs. fold equity
  • Can sometimes fold opponent (fold equity) for immediate profit
  • Double barrel turn if you have equity

Call With OESD

Against medium-sized bets (≤35% pot on turn), OESD can call purely on equity.

Implied odds consideration: If hitting straight is not obvious on board → implied odds are higher (opponent doesn't know to slow down when straight hits).

Coordinated vs. Non-Obvious Straights

Obvious straight: Board 6♥7♣8♠9♦ → Any T or 5 completes visible straight → Opponents slow down → Lower implied odds.

Hidden straight: Board K♠7♦2♣, you have 4-5-6-7 gutshot to straight (5-6-7-8 with K kicker) → Less obvious → Higher implied odds.

Hidden draws worth more implied odds.

Playing Gutshot

When To Semi-Bluff Gutshot

Gutshot alone (8-9% equity) = thin semi-bluff on its own.

But combine with:

Gutshot + overcards: 4 outs straight + 6 outs overcard pair = 10 outs total = much stronger semi-bluff candidate.

Gutshot + backdoor flush: 4 outs straight + ~3 backdoor flush equity = 7+ effective outs.

Gutshot + pair: 4 outs to nut straight + already have pair for showdown = strong spot.

Pure Gutshot: Be Careful

Pure gutshot without other equity → often better to fold than call large bets.

Exception: Excellent pot odds AND high implied odds situation.

Gutshot Bluff

River: Gutshot missed → pure bluff opportunity with zero showdown value.

Good gutshot missed bluff candidates:

  • Gut shot that blocked opponent's calling range
  • Convincing story that you had the straight (board texture supports)

Double Gutshot (Double Belly Buster)

Special case: Double belly buster = two different gutshots = 8 outs total (like OESD).

Example:

Hand: J♠9♦ Board: 8♦T♣Q♥

Missing cards: 7 (7-8-9-T-J) or K (9-T-J-Q-K) = both complete straights.

7s AND Ks = 8 outs total = functionally same as OESD.

Double belly buster often looks less obvious to opponents than OESD → better implied odds.

Key Rules To Remember

OESD:

  • 8 outs, ~33% on flop, ~17% on turn
  • Can call moderate bets with pot odds + implied odds
  • Strong semi-bluff candidate
  • Play aggressively to fold opponents OR hit

Gutshot:

  • 4 outs, ~17% on flop, ~9% on turn
  • Needs high pot odds OR implied odds to call
  • Alone = weak semi-bluff
  • Combines well with other equity
  • River bluff when missed (no showdown value)

Kết Luận

Understanding the difference between gutshot and OESD is fundamental poker knowledge:

  • OESD: Double the outs = double the equity = much more aggressive play justified
  • Gutshot: Half the outs = need much better odds or additional equity to play

Never treat a gutshot like an OESD — the math doesn't support it. But gutshots have hidden value when combined with overcards, backdoor draws, or showdown value. Learn to evaluate your complete equity (not just straight outs) for accurate decisions.
